I thought I'd make an effort on a day off and go for a decent ride, attempting to optimize the timing of it according to wind strengths and directions. As I was slogging up some hill at snail's pace into some ridiculous headwind just after Blyth Bridge however I realised that you can optimize all you want but sometimes it doesn't *quite* work out exactly the way you planned it. And the thought did cross my mind, "If there's a pub in the next village, I'm just going to go in and get a Guinness to perk me up a bit." There wasn't.
