When I got to the beach, the Animal Response Volunteer was setting up a perimeter cord around this Hawaiian Monk Seal which had pulled out on the far left side of the beach. Rather than galumphing down the slope, it just rolled to put itself closer to the water. After getting this faceful of water, it turned around and hauled itself a little higher. A couple came by and told the volunteer that they had seen a seal hauled out last nite in this same area. This volunteer was a wealth of information and readily engaged with the public - he was good! However, without seeing the seal's tags, he couldn't positively ID it. Maybe later . . .
Edit - the wind was an unusual south-south-west direction.
