Staple Diet?

Fortunately my groceries were delivered yesterday evening so I won't have to rely on just cereal and boiled eggs for the next few days, I can return to my staple diet... but it did get me wondering how or why the main ingredients of our diet got to be called that - such a strange combination of words. Are there any other combinations that intrigue you?
