If you can't beat them...

Scoppie.

Sorry for those who don't speak my native tongue (Cumbrian) this is a male Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs).

A busy day, the carpet fitters were due mid morning to fit the vinyl in the ensuite bathroom at  the Lodge and we wanted to get as near finished with the deep clean as possible.   All this left little time for blipping so I have fallen back on one of my "just in case shots".

Chaffinches are fortunate in being one of the species of no concern conservationwise.   During the summer there are an estimated 5,100,000 territories.   That is 10,200,000 birds then throw in the chicks and at the peak there are in the region of 20,400,000 Chaffinches in the UK.   Of course average life span is only 3 years and chick mortality after fledging about 50% so the population drops fairly rapidly.
