Black Gold
After the mailbox blip the other day it occurred to me that an "oil" blip might be a good idea. We see these machines so much around here that one hardly notices them at all, so I hadn't really thought about blipping one. On the way home today I pulled off on the side of the road and snapped this one. Not a great shot out of the car window, and on the wrong side of the car....I thought the mono helped it a little but I wish I could have taken a better picture. As I said, there are a lot of these things dotting the landscape here, I guess someone's still getting rich off that black gold. In nearby Burkburnett, TX the oil derricks in the early 1900's were so many they look like forests of iron. Burkburnett photo from 1919
Some interesting area history on the town of Burkburnett: In 1912, oil was discovered west of the town attracting thousands to the area and by 1918, an approximate twenty-thousand people had settled around the oilfield. This part of the town's history was chronicled in the movie Boom Town with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.
