How did we manage in the days before the backpack?

How would we manage without backpacks large or small? I certainly use one almost every day when I'm out so that my hands are free for photo taking.
I have been the owner of many backpacks but I have yet to find one that I would give 10 out of 10 .... lots of 9s but some day I will find the perfect one that is the right size, comfortable, pockets and straps in the places I want them.
