I wonta bit of Ponta
A lovely day trip out to Ponta do Ouro with Gisela and João for beach strolling, sand lying, cashew nut eating and general relaxing. A couple of years ago reaching this town at the southern end of Mozambique necessitated a ferry journey and four-hour drive on a bad road, or an even longer detour around the sticks. Now with the Catembe bridge and potentially best road in the country, it takes one and a half hours from Maputo, and is therefore ripe for day-trippers. It’s a lovely bay with some beach bars, diving trips to see bull sharks, and cabins nestled in the hills. The town is slightly less appealing than other beach resorts in Mozambique as Ponta has more obnoxious lads on quad bikes, but today elicited zero complaints.
On the drive back at sunset we saw some giraffes munching in the trees and I think I had been so energised by a day on the beach that I made some headway on a marine conservation proposal in the evening.
