Sewer gas lamp

This street light is the last remaining Sewer Gas Destructor Lamp in the City of Westminster. It was patented by Joseph Webb and installed in association with Sir Joseph Bazalgette's revolutionary Victoria Embankment sewer which opened in 1870. The lamp post was sited over the sewer and vented the gas into a perpetual flame where it would be consumed. This cast iron ornamental lamp standard, with original lantern, continues to burn off residual biogas.
