What is Poetry!

3°C  -  Feels like -2°C  -  18 mph Wind Speed  -  22 mph Gusts  -  Rain all day!  Beastly weather  -  had the light on all day!  Decided to spend the day on my FutureLearn.com 'What is Poetry?' online course which started today.  I've done numerous Poetry courses and there is always something new to learn from them all.  This one is run by the University of Queensland in Australia, so it will be interesting to see how their take on Poetry differs from a UK Uni!  Today the Poem to be analysed was Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light Brigade' with particular emphasis on how to create sound with words.  I did learn something new, but it wasn't to do with Poetry☺  It was the historical fact that the destination of the charge was a mistranslation of language and they chose the wrong destination where the enemy were well armed and ready for them  -  so 800 British soldiers died in the charge. Tennyson was making a tribute to the bravery of the soldiers and their allegiance to the throne  -  no mention of the stupidity of politicians and Post-Traumatic stress as there might be today.  I went through some of my earlier Poetry and found the only one hand-written  -  all the others were typed.  I'm glad I kept this hand-written one because it shows how I changed the opening lines, and the time of day I wrote it!!
