The dropped stitch

'The adventure begins here'

Coincidentally, the motto of the Boys' Brigade, whose blue hut provided a welcome bit of colour on a dark, grey, very blustery day.

The motto must sum up the thoughts of any postal worker, delivery company or meter reader as they approach the nearby housing scheme. It's a dense mass of houses where the numbering has a surprise at every corner.

As a distraction from the grim concrete, flooded walkways and closed-curtained windows, I imagine a planner with a flowery apron, tied at the waist. He has it gathered up in one hand just like photos of Shetland women broadcast sowing their neep seed. The apron contains many small square plaques numbered 1 to 70. Dipping in the other hand and with a circular sweep of his hand the numbers fly out in all directions. And so the plan is made.
