A PIER

Coastal erosion again, further down the North East Coast.
This is Withersea Pier, East Yorkshire UK - well all that is left of it. Go through the archway and down the steps and that is that !

Interestingly there is a plaque by this pier that states . . . one mile offshore from this point lies the site of a 13th century church of St Mary the Virgin (one of the sisterkerkes) lost to erosion by the 15th century . . .

Local legends tell of two sisters building separate churches after they argued over the style of a jointly funded church. One sister wanted a spire on the church, the other a tower. These two buildings became known as the sisterkerkes.

A great day out, so many thanks to my friend Maurice, but the biggest thrill of the day - spotting a Spoonbill on nearby ponds. Spoonbills should not be in the UK at this time of year. Obviously clock needs adjustment !
