Monitor Lizard Attack!

I shared Bangkok's Lumpini Park with some friends who were visiting from China. They were impressed by the size of the park and the small number of people there on a not-too-hot afternoon. We enjoyed walking around, sitting in the shade, pretending we couldn't hear the cars driving around outside the park, and watching the Monitor lizards.

This Water Monitor lizard was an especially big guy, at least 2 meters long. Supposedly they can weigh over 50 kg (110 lb). This guy was chowing down on a giant catfish as a couple other lizards looked on. I'm guessing size counts when you're a lizard because no one challenged him for his lunch, and he wasn't too happy when I got closer to take a picture. If you look close, you can see he's sticking his tongue out at us. No worries buddy, that giant raw catfish is all yours. :)
