A New Day
Today another reminder that we start fresh every day - that this democratic thing that we do in this country, while so full of bickering, quarreling, bullying, not budging, still works. That we do unite over more than ceremony. But today's ceremony was beyond the pale after the rough 4 years that followed so much promise in 2009.
There are so many elements I love of today's inauguration. James Taylor to Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce, a gay latino poet, Sonia Sotomayor oath of office to genial always grinning VP Joe Biden, the beautiful girls and first lady, the crowd waving flags and roaring approval, and the words of our President. So much stood out and he spoke to what is both inspiring and real. I selected these to highlight:
You and I, as citizens, have the obligation to shape the debates of our time - not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals. Let each of us now embrace, with solemn duty and awesome joy, what is our lasting birthright. With common effort and common purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history, and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom.
AMEN
