Shaniko - Oregon's "Best" Ghost Town
It's about a 6 hour drive from our home in Central Washington to Bend, Oregon, where our son Patrick lives. Going down on Saturday, we drove through the little town of Shaniko (population 38).
Shaniko was an important part of the wool trade in 1898, shipping fleeces down to the Columbia River. The wool trade is long gone and the town has pretty much disappeared. It seems like some effort has been made to preserve the old hotel, but even the restored hotel is closed right now along with a few efforts of a museum, art gallery, etc.
I wish I hadn't been so anxious to get home as there was a lot to photograph there. See the extras for a few more.
