Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

By Carol

2020 Saturday — Garcia Funeral

Our friend, Dorothy, and her family laid her mother, Gladys, to rest today in San Luis Obispo (SLO). Today is Gladys’ 98th birthday; she was born, raised, married, and lived her entire life in this city on the Central Coast region of California.

Gladys still lived on the 100 acre cattle ranch that she and her late husband own. It is the ranch that her husband, Eddie’s, grandparents originally owned. The property is now surrounded by vineyards.

Approximately 20 years ago Eddie & Gladys leased the land to a young couple who now live on the ranch and raise the cattle. Eddie passed away 15 years ago.

A deacon from the Catholic Church officiated at the service and asked her family and friends to tell the stories of Gladys’ life. The stories were proof of what a wonderful and hard working woman she had been.

Dorothy had one older brother, Jimmy, who died when he was 15 from a brain aneurysm.

We exited the Reis Mortuary Chapel, drove to the old Mission Cemetery, and then to the Madonna Inn for the reception.

We have known Dorothy since the late 1960s when she and her first husband moved into our neighborhood in Southern California and their three kids became friends with our two kids and all of them eventually went to school together.

This was a day of many emotions.
