The dropped stitch

Kirkwall Harbour Wall

A lot of extra walking around the harbour area because the flood gates were closed. It was a case of doubling back all the time to use the entrance to the Shapinsay ferry car park.

Near the RNLI station I spotted this inscription in the wall:

When the wind is in the north the skilful fisher goes not forth
When the wind is in the south it blows the bait in the fishes mouth
When the wind is in the east tis neither good for man nor beast
When the wind is in the west then it is at its very best.

The words are those of an old nursery rhyme it seems.
