Nostalgia for Boomers
Some local musicians got together last year to recreate the Beatles Abbey Road album for a local music festival. They enjoyed themselves so much that they put on the show a number of times elsewhere and now the've extended their repertoire to cover a very significant chance of the Beatles back catalogue.
So, despite the gales and the torrential rain, we went to the local village hall last night for their show. I decided against taking a proper camera given the weather conditions so this is taken with my phone. They've clearly put a fair bit of time and effort into this project as they produced surprisingly accurate versions of the Beatles back catalogue over a 2 hour period. Most people of our age are sufficiently familiar with the Beatles music to take it for granted, but its still enormously impressive when the sheer variety and range of the work is performed live. Needless to say, there was lots of singing along and dancing ....
Cathy and I were talking afterwards, and we wondered whether the Beatles catalogue will be as well known in 25 years time, or mean the same to people. For the generation around at the time of the Second World War artists such as Vera Lynn were very significant, but we rarely if ever choose to listen to them now. So when the Boomers are gone, will the Beatles become an interesting but seldom explored page in popular music history, just a few popular songs that are occasionally played at sing-a-long sessions in nursing homes?
