From start to finish...

Getting to the reflective stage...

First thing I knew about George Wyllie was that he made the life size Straw Locomotive which hung from the Finnieston Crane. This photo is of the wee version of it which is, notwithstanding all the other pieces, probably my favourite at the exhibition because of the jumble of memories it provokes...

...1987, Mayfest, my first teaching job (in the East end of Glasgow, not that far from Springburn), people smiling at the audacity of the art, the promise of a Garden Festival to come the following year, and somehow, mixed in with all that are images of Wildcat Theatre Company, the Citizens, the Third Eye and a melee of music which seems to include Deacon Blue and Hue & Cry, as well as Elaine C. Smith belting out the big numbers while making stinging statements...

In 25 years time wonder what images and sounds the pupils will remember about that time they made paper boats and went to the George Wyllie exhibition at the Mitchell...
