Fort-de-France, Martinique

We were alongside by 0800.  Martinique is an insular region of France located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the eastern Caribbean Sea with a land area of 436 Sq miles and a population of around 390,000 inhabitants.  It is an overseas region of France, consisting of a single overseas department.  One of the Windward Islands, it is directly north of Saint Lucia, south of Dominica and northwest of Barbados.  As part of France, Martinique is part of the EU, and its currency is the euro.  The official language is French, and virtually the entire population also speaks Antillean Creole.

Martinique was not on our original itinerary and it was great to visit as it had a lovely feel about it.  We walked into the town and had a look around the coastal area and then the main town of Fort-de-France.  It felt quite different from other islands and the shops there sold more everyday items rather than purely catering for tourists.
