KNIFE ANGEL

Had a good night sleep and a nice long lie in so I was motivated to go out today.  I wanted to see the Knife Angel which has arrived at The Sage, Gateshead.  But I wanted to see it after dark as I knew it would be lit up then.  So I pottered around at home and got the bus to Gateshead around 4.30pm.

Walked down to The Sage and then outdoors to the Angel.  At night its  illuminated in red to not only stand out against the background, but to also symbolise the unnecessary bloodshed that violent behaviour has caused all across the country.  I have seen photos of the sculpture online, on TV and on blip but actually seeing it in person was something else.  Its amazing.  And very moving.  I have added a collage with some different views.

If you want to see what the sculpture looks like in daylight check out this blip

I guess most people know the story of the Knife Angel but if you don't here is a bit of info about it.

The Knife Angel is a 27ft sculpture crafted out of 100,000 knives that have been surrendered to police forces across the country. It is also known as the National Monument Against Violence & Aggression. The  sculpture recognises those whose lives have been taken by knife crime and acts as a memorial for bereaved families. It was first unveiled in 2017 and has been touring the UK since. The Knife Angel came to Gateshead on January 30  2020 following a campaign by Alison Madgin from Wallsend whose 18-year-old daughter Samantha was stabbed to death in 2007. It will remain until February 27th. In March it will appear in Telford and in April in Wolverhampton.

After seeing the Knife Angel I got the bus back to Gateshead and did a bit of shopping in Tesco.

The weather today was bright and dry but very cold.
