Bookcase

I liked the play of light coming through the door onto this bookcase. I like the bookcase too. It was made in Texas by David Marsh and the names of all the people who worked on it are on the back. We bought it years ago because it fit perfectly underneath the window in our bedroom. It is still in our bedroom but this one has only one place to go which is on the wall across from our bed. It seems to have become the forever home of all the things we really should get rid of or don't know what else to do with...including about four years' worth of Blue Apron recipes and a bag of clothespins which I bought for a clothesline I have since taken down because it tried to decapitate me....

The political process in this country is a shambles. Monday's Iowa caucuses, which were supposed to give some definition  to the race among the  still large number of  too many Democratic candidates hoping to defeat Trump, were instead  chaotic and lacking results due to technological problems in the vote counting.

Last night,  Trump gave a State of the Union message which was nothing but a campaign speech full of inflated claims and outright lies. At some point during the proceedings, Melania presented Rush Limbaugh, a notorious right wing radio talk show host, with the Medal of Honor. Nobody could possibly be less honorable than perhaps Trump himself.

Nancy Pelosi, sitting behind Trump as Speaker of the House, in her own changing interpretation of protocol pointedly tore up a copy of his speech after he had finished giving it. And after he ignored her proffered hand. Decorum and precedent have gone the way of the dinosaur. (Although I have to hand it to her for saying saying to reporters that that was actually the honorable thing compared to what she really wanted to do.)

Trump himself was acquitted today on a straight party line vote by a bunch of Republicans who seem to have lost their consciences, their grasp of what they were elected to do and their backbones.

My favorite quote of the day came from Mike Thompson, our own Sonoma County Democratic congressman, who said Trump sounded like the rooster who took credit for the sunrise....
