antarctic Adventure - Day 8 Deception Island

Antarctic Journal  Day 8
25th January 2020


Today is our last day before flying back to Chile tomorrow.


We were taken to Hannah Point on Livingston island where we landed and walked though an amazing colony of penguins, seals and seabirds.   This special place probably had the largest concentration and most varied number of species we had seen in one place.   


The penguins in my third extra with the fancy headgear are Macaroni penguins and the fourth type of penguin we had seen on our trip.   There were several groups of Elephant seals.  Unfortunately the misty conditions made photography tricky.  However there were several Elephant seals fighting which was an amazing sight.


After lunch we arrived at Deception Island,  so called because it is an enormous caldera of an active volcano.   The last eruption was in 1969 and it is apparently overdue for another eruption.   


The beach at Whalers Bay inside the rim has the remains of an old whaling station that was abandoned after the last eruption.   There are a number of derelict buildings and pieces of machinery.  (see main picture and first two extras)


There are no penguins here because the water is too warm.  In fact there were cooked Krill washed up on the beach in places.  The sand also felt hot to touch.
