Galle
Spent our final day exploring Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Lots of architectural styles influenced by Dutch & British over the centuries, and Buddhist, Moslem & Hindu temples. Touristy but lots to see and good to walk around, looking for shade. Bought a little carved elephant and chatted to a local who could quote sections of Macbeth perfectly!
The Fort walls protected the area to a great extent during the tragic & devastating 2004 tsunami, but damage is still visible.
Enjoyed a cocktail, then a final Sri Lankan curry feast before freshening up & changing clothes to head to the airport for a 2:45am flight.
Wonderful, resilient, welcoming place ... hope we’ll come back for longer.
