It is only February...

... but my volunteer colleagues at the local library are already pressing me into photographing sites to include in our '2021 Harrogate Then & Now' calendar.

They originally wanted this particular old photo for the current calendar - but it was chosen too late in the year, because the trees at the centre of the Now shot had too much foliage for anyone to see the buildings behind - hence an early start this year.

Even so, it is quite difficult to see the building behind the trees. The same building was even more obscured in the Then picture, taken around 1938, because there was a house in front of it. That house was demolished shortly after the photo was taken and a traffic roundabout is now in its place.

The rather smart building on the right of the picture was the Claremont Hotel which has since been converted to private apartments.
