The Saltoun Fountain

This gloriously ornate precast iron fountain was erected in 1904. It was originally positioned on the corner of Strichen Road intended to provide a suitably imposing entrance to Fraserburgh. It was moved in 1923 to allow the War Memorial to be placed at what was then the main entrance to the town. The fountain was cast by Walter McFarlane & Co, Saracen Foundry, Glasgow and was personalised for Fraserburgh by the addition of an ostrich carrying the key to the Burgh to the canopy. This is derived from the former Burgh coat of arms. The Saltoun coat of arms incorporates an ostrich carrying a horseshoe. Similar fountains were exported world wide..
