Europe no more....... How could we?
I can't believe today has come.
This morning I continued the preparations for my own departure from Europe as I head off to India next week. Unlike the UK though, or at least for the moment, I'm lucky enough to be coming back.
I now have beautiful sparkly red toenails - I'll be wearing my chappals and my feet will get very dusty so shiny nails are good. It's not a good idea to have polish on finger nails in South India as you use your fingers to eat with. It's important to be able to see that your fingers and under your nails are clean, so red toenails it is.
Later in the afternoon I met up with around a dozen fellow students from college. I left Callendar Park College almost 45 years ago and the college closed 6 years later so we're a rare bunch. Most of those who were there today were from the years just below me, but lovely to see old friends again after such a long time. We're almost all retired now and grandparents rather than parents but we can still see and remember the people we were. Time and memories plus the odd libation blur the edges beautifully! Several were heading down to Holyrood for the vigil later, but we tried not to think about it too much.
It does irritate me that the over 60's are blamed by many for the vote to leave Europe, I don't think I know more than a handful who did that. However here in Scotland of course we voted 62% in favour of staying in.
I was heading back home early, and passed the end of Rose Street it wasn't nearly so salubrious when I was at college, it's moved a long way up market. I loved the lights over the roadway and the rich blueness of the sky reminded me of our saltire and of course the European flag. How could we?
So goodnight, tomorrow is the start of another era. As the installation at the gallery of Modern Art says, "There is Hope " there has to be!
