Lifebelts

Sheer good luck that back in 2002, as soon as we were able, we applied for French nationality (it took five years to achieve, but that's another story). The French civil servants we dealt with were quite bemused. "You don't need to do this," they told us. "You're EU citizens, you have an automatic right to live and work here." Who knew in those days what was to come? We certainly didn't. But we're very appreciative of that lifebelt now.

On a personal level we are safe, but it doesn't stop me feeling upset and angry about what's happened to the country I was born in, which feels like a foreign country now. I'm so sorry for all those young people who won't get the opportunities we had, and I just hope that the consequences for the UK aren't as dark as they look now. We'll keep a light on for you.
