Banter

n \ ban-ta \ a description indulgently given to excessive or aggressive horseplay which might cause offence or annoyance.

The description of 'banter' is usually deployed to deflect or invalidate the complaints of those on the receiving end, the inference being that it is 'just a bit of fun'. However, paradoxically, this ceases to apply to those who initiate such an exchange - that is, those 'giving it' - when they are expected to 'take it' in kind from the original subject, or indeed, any third party.
