Commemoration
I noticed these three plaques at Galway Station as we queued for the train to Dublin this afternoon and then again at Dublin Heuston Station when we arrived three hours later.
I know of course that they contained the proclaimation of the Irish Republic from the 1916 Rising but what I didn’t know is that in 1966 to mark the 50th anniversary Ireland had renamed fifteen of its stations after those executed including Sam Heuston and , for Galway, Eamonn Ceannt. These plaques and an adjoining one giving details of the individual being commemorated, were erected then.
