No scholarship or exhibition - but still a place

This letter comes straight to the point. Today it is more usual for missives such as this to start with a more gentle note of thanks to the candidate for taking part in the process of interviews and exams. There might also be mention of the high level of competition for awards. Only thereafter would the message 'No scholarship or exhibition - but still a place' be conveyed.

By December 1932 Lorna knew that she had won a state scholarship for undergraduate study, so she already had funding for her higher education. She was thus able to accept this offer, and went up to Girton to read English in 1933.
