Encountered on my morning walk

I actually see this sign nearly every day, but for that reason I usually don’t see it. Today I realized that it is incredibly typical of Berkeley — not only because of the reference to the tree (California live oaks are distinctly different from English oaks) but also because of the typeface, which was invented by a local artist named David Lance Goines and is used on all city documents, official signs, public buildings, etc. Again, it is something I am so used to that I see it without seeing it, but it subliminally signals “Berkeley” to me.
