Fraught!
One hell of a day that started pleasantly enough with opening the hens and taking Oscar for his playdate! Oscar and Ivy run between me and John to get treats - good exercise! At this point Ivy was just watching Oscar go! If you look large you will see the water flying off his coat! Once home it was supplying The Builder with drinks and cake! The builder has started painting the cupboard he's built to hide my immersion tank, the wooden "step" that covers the toilet outlet pipe and the skirting boards! I started work clearing the utility room so I can store kitchen stuff in there instead!
In the afternoon I got a message from a coop member asking if I was free to chat. Oh yikes I thought - does she want to leave?! I replied and she then called me via messenger but I couldn't hear her so rang her back but still no sound - so she then messaged me again. She was asking for money! I thought it odd she was asking me as I only know her through the coop and she is a newish member, but we have chatted before on the plot. I also gave her money for a start up to make prosthetic breasts. Her mother had had a mastectomy and she had realised how naff the current prosthetics were so had designed a new type. As my mum had a mastectomy I was pleased to help her. I guessed she was embarrassed asking her parents and knew I was not short of a bob or two so asked me. I told her I had cash and to call round. She said she was waiting in for a parcel so could I transfer it. I know how frustrating waiting for a parcel can be so agreed and sent her what she needed.
Come the early evening I noticed Oscar was holding his paw up, I suspected it was his split nail, but he wasn't licking it. He had finished his antibiotics the day before and the vet had said if infection got in and went to the bone it was nasty to sort out. I washed it in salted water - the mud from the field was wedged in the splits - one either side of his nail! He settled in his basket as I ate my dinner and again I noticed he was not putting his paw down, he kept moving it around. I knew my vet had late opening on a weds eve so called to make an appointment for the next day - come now the receptionist said! So off we set - in torrential rain in the dark! Another course of antibiotics and if that fails he will have to have general anaesthetic and the nail cut and thoroughly cleaned.
When I got home I saw a facebook post from the coop member - she had been hacked, do not respond to any of her messages and do not send any money! Oh dear! I tried logging on to my bank account to check it was ok and could not get online to it! So I phoned my bank to report it and ensure nothing untoward had been tried on my account! On our message thread were my bank details!
Well, one of the security details was my security banking number - no idea what that was and it was not in my little book I keep all such matters and passwords! What is your overdraft limit she asked - no idea I replied! I knew w it had been increased, not at my request, but couldn't remember how much by and of course couldn't go online to check it! I no longer get paper statements either! So I had to go upstairs and find my last paper statement - which took a lot of digging amongst the crap in my upstairs room! When I eventually found them and the last statement was from 2014! This was ok and so finally they checked my account and said all was fine. I then got transferred to fraud to start an investigation. I don't think that will yield any results and I can definitly kiss the money goodbye!
What an evening!
Just how can people hack into your private facebook account, turn off the facility to make calls, and be adept at writing just as I knew the coop member did?! I had said at one point how any message from a coop member raises my alarm incase there had been a catastrophe with the hens or they want to leave. She had replied she would not leave as she loved the hens too much! Just what I would expect her to say! But then they had obviously read all her other messages to me! I feel rather foolish I didn't realise this was a hack - I was surprised she had approached me but had reasoned it out! I'm usually pretty good at spotting fake emails and facebook posts! An expensive lesson learnt!
