Technogeek Day #2

Following from yesterday's geeky blip, I thought I'd stick to the same theme today. My Dad's computer has played up intermittently since he bought it a few years ago - in fact it went back under guarantee but all they did was to reinstall Windows. We've had to reinstall it a few times since then but eventually it starts either failing to start, or going slow (or, more often, both). We also replaced the hard disk with a solid state disc some time back  to speed it up and in case the original disk was faulty.

I'm wishing that I'd built a computer for him, as all the ones I've put together myself over the years have been very reliable (including my current 6-year-old one which is brilliant). I suspect that the firms that build them cut corners on quality with some of the components, whereas building it yourself you can select top-quality components throughout.

Anyway, we spent a happy few hours this morning experimenting with it (I love experimenting!). I decided that it would be a good idea to insert a second disk drive for the operating system and program files, keeping data on the other disk, as then one can mess with the installation with less fear of losing data (although he does have a pretty good backup regimen). So far it's working again...we don't know for how long! I suspect the power supply may be prone to glitches, but as it's in a small form factor mini tower case it has a non-standard power supply and we couldn't get my spare full-size power supply to work properly with it.

I promise no geeky blip tomorrow ;-))

Coincidence: I just noticed that blipper Hildasrose's hubby was geeking today with his father-in-law!
