The Edge of the Wold

Plover Scar Lighthouse

This is a record shot of our expedition south of Lancaster in search of birds. It is the small Plover Scar Lighthouse at the entrance of the Lune Estuary that helps to guide boats coming up through Morecambe Bay into the Lune channel headed for Glasson Dock and the Lancaster Canal.

The wind off the bay was very strong, and getting a steady shot with a big lens on the camera was quite a challenge. There were as always plentiful waders in the fields around Cockersands Abbey, huge flocks of golden plovers, godwits, and curlews. And nearby we had seen big flocks of whooper swans and even bigger flocks of pink footed geese.

We had taken Sue for a day out, in part as a distraction from the loss of Rowan (I shall say more of that when I eventually do my Gus back blip for 27th December). We had a good day out, though the weather worsened as we headed towards the main destination for the afternoon. The bird was there, but did we see it?
