The dropped stitch

A fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable train journey from Inverness to Thurso on the Far North Line.

The scenery changes, along with so many small station stops mean you need to be looking out of the window the whole time. My favourite, the tiny station at Altnabreac, which when it was opened in 1874 was 8 miles away from the nearest village and 10 miles away from the nearest road.

Next, a bus from Thurso took us along miles of twisty, narrow roads all the way to the ferry. For most of the ride we were the only passengers. The ferry arrived on time and delivered us safely back to Orkney.

Hurray for public transport and calm weather!
