A day out in Manchester

Gill has wanted to visit The Lowry for a while so today we took the train into Manchester and the tram out to Salford Quays.  The Lowry was very good and the introductory talk illuminating - there is much more to Lowry's work than the matchstick men and mill scenes.  His early drawings give a clue to his ability and it is a great pity he was not recognised for what he was earlier in his life.  After the Lowry we looked in on the Manchester Art Gallery which has more of his work alongside some of his tutor Valette's which make an interesting contrast, some of the elements Lowry included in his own work can also be seen. There are some good Dutch golden age paintings too and a lot more we didn't see.

By late afternoon the town was becoming busy with fans heading for the Manchester City game, so we beat a retreat to Piccadilly Station and caught the train back. 

Having failed to find an interesting blip in daylight I settled on this view of the station platform roof - a tenuous link to Whippin' Piccadilly - which I have been wanting to include in a blip for ages!
