Do you regret the discipline you received in school, or the kind of precision and discipline that there is in photography?
No. I became a professional! It's true that the discipline, the extraordinary amount of patience that is needed to become a photographer, is instilled. You know, they always say that a photographer is "a hunter of images". That is a flattering image, the idea of a hunter; it's virile, acquired power. Actually, though, it isn't that. We are really fishermen with hooks and lines! Happily, man is still the most important part of the picture-making process. This is an idea that is still not well established in people's minds. They think that, thanks to this potential for repetition, in photography an extraordinary picture will be found every time - but this just isn't so. The best photos, the ones that are remembered, are the ones that have first passed through the person's mind before being restored by the camera.
