Or, a nice design spoiled by poor materials.

Last year we had all our interior doors replaced. The door catches were these rather nice looking Italian made cylindrical ones. After about six months, the one on the bathroom door failed, fortunately as I opened it, as the handle wouldn't operate the bolt.
Just before we left for our Christmas holiday the catch on the cloakroom door failed in exactly the same way but in this case as I left, closing the door behind me. This morning it took me nearly three hours to get the door open and remove the catch.
The mechanism seems to be made of a cheap brittle die casting, in both cases a piece has broken off and jammed the bolt.
