St Oran’s…

…………………..Chapel, Iona, Scotland

A Back Blip, uploaded 28th December for 15th May.

This morning we crossed as foot passengers on the ferry from the Isle of Mull to Iona, a holy isle which is described as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland.

Iona Abbey is one of Scotland's most historic and sacred sites. It was founded by St Columba and his Irish followers in AD 563. The Abby Church has been restored and is an active place of worship.

St Oran's Chapel is the oldest remaining church on the island.  Built in the 12th century, the chapel was dedicated to St Oran.

Iona Nunnery. This was an Augustinian convent. It was established sometime after the foundation of the nearby monastery in 1203. The ruins of the nunnery are surrounded by gardens and close to the main village, Baile Mor.

Maclean’s Cross. Medieval pilgrims paused here to pray on their approach to the Abby. It was erected around 1500, and paid for by the MacLean family.

The main photo was taken inside St Oran’s Chapel. The interior was simplistic, quiet and very peaceful. We were the only two inside
