While continuing the tidying up I ventured into our son’s room.

In one corner is an 3 litre large bottle into which he drops the needle protectors once he’,s done his insulin injection.

With the news the other day of the new Speaker’s discovery that he is diabetic, it seems appropriate to emphasise that it is something that can be managed. As various people like Steve Redgrave, Theresa May and many others have demonstrated.

It does require routine and self discipline. And an awareness by friends, family and colleagues of the symptoms to look out for. Throughout the near 13 years our son has had it, the NHS has been excellent with its support and advice. And it is sobering to think that a century ago the diagnosis would have more likely than not have been a death sentence.

The technology and science continues to improve. Hygiene is essential but something may need to be done about the impact of the plastic covers. This blip represents 4-6 months’ worth of needle covers.
