My new camera (a Canon Powershot S100 for those who like to geek about such things) actually has a snow scene mode; in my tests it seems to do a lot to boost the vividness of colours in everything else, and stop the snow glare whiting too much out. This was actually taken without the snow scene mode, but I think it captures the gloom of a snowy afternoon in England beautifully.
