Troy, myth and reality

What better to do on a wet and miserable Thursday than visit the British Museum.

The exhibition about Troy explores the importance of the story in all forms of art, and looks at the archaeological evidence for both the city of Troy, and the likelihood of the famous events.

They have gathered together items from the British Museum collection, exhibits from Pompeii and the wonderful Naples Museum, Pre-Raphaelite bits and pieces, and items found by Schliemann in his excavation of what is most likely to have been the site of Troy.

The exhibition probably didn’t add anything new, but it was pure luxury to wander and reflect.

My blip is an Italian 19th century sculpture, “The Wounded Achilles” by Filippo Albacini. It’s borrowed from the Devonshire Collection in Chatsworth.

And my extra is a beautiful gold brooch inspired by Helen of Troy’s alleged treasures.

And before you ask, I did not give in to temptation.

Operas tomorrow... but who can guess what kind of country we will wake up to.
