Just Like That

And yes, just like that,
the day can turn out differently
to the one you had planned.

Spotting this across the road
I felt, again, an icy hand
squeezing the life out of me.

I have to say, somewhat selfishly,
I'm glad this ambulance
is not for me

though I have the greatest sympathy
for any frightened shrunken figure
sitting on the stairs

gasping for breath
and fearing they might choke
just like that. It's no joke.
