Further along Cold Bath Road, just a short distance from the shops is the Adelphi Hotel, built in the early 1800s to cater for the increasing visitors to Harrogate to 'take the waters'.

Many visitors continued to visit Harrogate 'for the cure' and the Adelphi thrived. In the inter-war period the 'cure' became less popular, but visitors still kept coming for the concerts and music hall.

Several hotels were requisitioned by the government in 1939 at the outbreak of the 2nd world war. The Aldephi was one of many housing government officers.

After the war and the birth of the NHS it was decided that 'modern drugs had superseded the need for taking the waters' and the responsibility fell to the new Regional Health Authority.'

In the 1980s the Adelphi was sold and transformed into a complex of houses and apartments for elderly people. Residents own their property and live independently, but there is a warden on hand to oversee the upkeep of the building and arrange activities etc.
