Glasgow University tower

The original building on Gilmorehill was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott.  On its high south-facing elevation it catches all the winter sunshine that going - and there was plenty of that today. Scott was the architect of many iconic buildings, including the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial. However it was his son, John Oldrid Scott, who finished the  tower between 1887 and 1891, with four turrets and an open lattice stone spire. It was his own design, his father having originally designed a heavier-looking clock tower. The son's spire has a light, elegant feel, which complements the rest of the building.
