Deadbeat escapement
This is a giant deadbeat escapement as it come from the old church tower clock which is now preserved in a glass case inside the church. A longcase clock has a recoil escapement which can be seen by the seconds hand that kicks fractionally backwards on each tick of the clock. A deadbeat escapement is more accurate and interrupts the escape wheel at each tick with no backwards movement. I had coffee in town and brought the workmate home as the wooden planks of the kitchen floor have warped again. The cowboys who fitted it never left enough room for temperature expansion.
