amaryllis for HD research

The money from my purchase of this amaryllis went toward research for the cure of Huntington's Disease. HD is a progressive degeneration of brain cells that affect muscle control, cognitive function, and mood. It is caused by a genetic defect, but the symptoms usually don't show up until the person is between the ages of 30 and 50. It is a rare disease, affecting only 5 out of every 100,000 people.

It hit home for us when my husband was diagnosed with HD three years ago at the age of 60. Now we understand that he inherited it from his mother. We thought she had suffered from mini strokes and depression. The genetic basis of HD was not discovered until 1993, 2 years after her death.

At the moment there is no cure for HD, but research is making great strides in that area and coming up with medications to help with the symptoms. Hubby was recently on a trial medication that made a real difference. We are hoping it will come on the market soon.

I think a bloom in the middle of winter is a good image for hope!
