Marigold

Pot marigold or calendula growing by the roadside near Peathill Kirk. During a 19th century cholera outbreak the minister, Walter Gregor, preached what were known as, 'sanitary sermons' during which he urged his parishioners to avoid infection by whitewashing their walls and planting marigolds round their doors.
