County gaol and house of correction
The title comes from the inscription, sadly not clearly visible here, along the top of the gatehouse - it's on the darker section in this image. Directly above the gate is inscribed "Erected: MDCCCVIII" which I know you will all speedily convert to 1808.
The image is the entrance to Her Majesty's Prison Canterbury and this week the Ministry of Justice announced that it would be closed by April. The 300 foreign national prisoners currently held there will be dispersed through the estate. The staff will be left looking for work. The prison stands within the original precincts of St. Augustine's monastery, is between two of Canterbury's World Heritage sites and is next to Christ Church University so I'd have thought that shifting the land won't be too much of a problem.
So today featured Canterbury for a tutorial and a wander around the corner to grab this shot before a swift bit of panic buying at the supermarket and then grabbing coal and logs to fend off the much promised "Day after tomorrow" style cold snap. Let that baby roll right in now as I have milk, bread, beer and a large amount of marking to sustain me. See you on the other side!
