Worst maritime disaster in British history
Today’s photo is a memorial sculpture and tribute to the Beardmore shipyard on Clydebank where its most famous ship, the Lancastria was built in 1920 .Now it is the site of the Golden Jubilee hospital.
The sinking of the Lancastria in 1940 was the worst single disaster in British maritime history.
It went to help with the Dunkirk evacuation and left with around 9,000 men on board.
But it received three direct hits from a German Junkers 88 bomber and sank within 20 minutes, only 2,477 passengers were saved.
This claimed more lives than the sinking of the Titanic and Lusitania combined. And it’s the largest single loss of life for British Forces in the whole of World War 11.
Yes I have had another trip to the Golden Jubilee hospital in Glasgow this afternoon this time for the pre- op assessment. This is where they go through you with a toothcomb looking for health problems.
I will know in a few days if I have passed and if so I could be “ done and dusted” ie with a new knee before Christmas- or I could be spending Christmas in the hospital! They do their last operation on Christmas Eve morning.
Either way it’s a lot to take in.
